About this Class
GYROKINESIS® is a method that was created by dancer Juliu Horvath and is intended to bring the body to a balanced sense of ease, while creating strength and flexibility for all of the body systems. Drawing from elements of yoga, dance, tai chi and swimming, we will flow through movement sequences using breath as the engine. This method is taught throughout the world, and is enjoyed by many for its circular and spiraling movements that are uplifting and regenerative.

About this Class
With the use of props provided, the class would integrate somatic practice, fascial intelligence, and contemporary movement, exploring how dancers can cultivate embodied presence, efficiency, and sustainable performance over extended periods of time. Rather than focusing on endurance through effort, it would investigate nervous system regulation, breath, rebound, weight, adaptability, and recovery within movement—qualities that support both durational performance and contemporary dance practice more broadly while also working with materiality.

About this Class

In this class, we will explore the physical and energetic actions of opening—stretching, widening, softening, and expanding—by connecting deeply with our thinking-feeling-moving bodies. Through improvisation, we’ll engage with concepts of Introductions, Beginnings, Apertures, Gaps, Opportunities, and Chances, allowing new possibilities to emerge from our solo, duo, and group experiments.

Sometimes, using touch and contact, we move through the body’s fascinating portals—eyes, mouth, ears, and others—discovering what opens within and around us in each present practicing moment.

About this Class

These classes will explore danced movement situations to expand movement variability, mobility, strength, dynamic range and bodily awareness, while remaining attuned to the Fighting Monkey principles of training for adaptability and longevity.

The classes will include FM coordinations and task-based choreography, tools/partnered training and improvisation led in the Fighting Monkey Practice style. Importantly: this is not a “fight” practice, rather we fight our monkey minds.

In FM coordinations and task-based choreography, we work with movement sequences delivered via a full-complexity approach in order to gain insight into our learning strategies and help uncover our movement blindspots. The coordinations also train dynamic range and elastic capacity for power and mobility. With the FM tools/partnered training, we work with instinctual/reactive movement and hone shared body empathy and communication skills necessary for partnered dancing. In the improvisation work, we mine for variability: using the specificity of a task to tune bodily self-awareness and expand movement capacity.

_______________

Fighting Monkey is a longevity practice that values variability, adaptability and finding resilience by understanding our inherent relative fragility. Through curated “play under pressure” situations, we investigate strategies of observation, communication and learning and in this expand our movement capacity.
